Through the Community Building Partnership, the NSW Government is investing in infrastructure projects that promote community participation and inclusion – such as access ramps, car park upgrades and equipment sheds.
There is a maximum of $300,000 to allocate in each electorate. Incorporated not-for-profit community organisations and local councils are eligible to apply for grants of between $5,000 and $150,000. The average grant awarded is around $20,000.
Projects with contributions from their own, or other sources, will be considered favourably.
As total funding will be divided equally among the state electorates of NSW, applications will be assessed against other proposed projects within the same electorate.
Eligible projects will be assessed against four equally weighted program criteria:
- Enhancing facilities: the project develops a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive community through the enhancement or construction of community infrastructure.
- Meeting community needs: the project supports activities and services needed by local communities.
- Increasing community participation: the project encourages participation in activities or services needed by a broad section of the community.
- The organisation’s capacity: the applicant has the capacity to deliver the project on time and within scope.
The Community Building Partnership 2021 will consider funding requests between $5,000 and $150,000 for projects involving:
- capital works including construction of new community infrastructure as well as refurbishment, repair and maintenance of existing community infrastructure
- the purchase of equipment with a minimum individual asset value of more than $5,000
- the purchase of vehicle/s with a minimum individual asset value of more than $5,000.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Unlike most grants, the Community Building Program offers the opportunity to nominate Full and Partial funding amounts — eg if you have a project to renovate a hall, you might decide that you NEED $20,000 for the urgent repairs and painting outside, but if an extra $10,000 was available you could re-paint the inside and install an air conditioner. The $20,000 is REQUIRED for the main project and if this funding is NOT available the project can NOT proceed. But by having access to an $10,000 would enable you to do a little more “now” but it not current urgent nor essential for the project to proceed — so rather than missing out on all the funding, nominate $35,000 as the total project cost and then list only $20,000 has the partial funding amount.
It’s also important to note that projects that DO NOT have development consent WILL STILL be considered, however, you must have commenced discussions with your local council and be ready to lodge the development application by November 2021.
Development consent must be secured by 31 July 2022. The release of the grant funds is conditional on the development consent being secured. If you do not secure development consent by this date, the grant offer may be withdrawn.
